The Former President's Actions Constitute a Threat to Our Social Fabric.
The national and international strategies – ranging from the attempted coup previously to latest incursions and threats – undermine both national and global jurisprudence. But that’s not all.
They endanger the fundamental meaning of a civilized world.
The moral purpose of civilized society is to stop the stronger from harming and taking advantage of the less powerful. Failing that, we could find ourselves locked in a brutish war where survival of the strongest could survive.
This ideal is embedded of the nation's founding texts. This is also the foundation of the postwar international order supported by the America, emphasizing collective action, democratic governance, human rights, and the rule of law.
But, it is a vulnerable principle, easily violated by those who choose to misuse their power. Upholding it necessitates that the those in charge have a sense of duty to refrain from seeking immediate gains, and that society demand responsibility should they falter.
Absolute power does not equal right. It leads to uncertainty, upheaval, and conflict.
Every time people or corporations or countries that are advantaged prey upon those that are weaker, the framework of society unravels. If these actions are allowed to continue, the structure collapses. Without intervention, the world can plunge into chaos and war. It has happened before.
We now inhabit a international landscape with deepening divides. Influence and wealth are more concentrated than in recent memory. This invites the elite to leverage their position against the less fortunate because they feel omnipotent.
The wealth of a handful of ultra-wealthy individuals is staggering. The power of global industrial giants spans numerous countries. AI is likely to consolidate economic and political clout to a greater degree. The destructive power of the world's largest nations is unmatched in the annals of time.
Empowered by a compliant faction and an accommodating judicial body, the executive office has been made into the most dominant and unchecked agent of state power in history.
Combine these factors and you see the threat.
An unbroken thread ties past lawless actions to ongoing menaces. These were based on the overconfidence of absolute power.
One observes much the same in the actions of other powers: in wars of aggression, in strategic threats, and in the global depredation by powerful corporate entities.
But, unfettered might does not create right. It produces fragility, upended order, and armed conflict.
Historical evidence demonstrates that frameworks designed to limit the influential also safeguard them. Without such constraints, their relentless pursuit for more power and wealth in time bring them down – along with their corporations, nations, or empires. And pave the way for international catastrophe.
This blatant disregard for rules will plague international stability – and indeed civilized conduct – for a long time.
