The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but within Together resides a profound contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when the couple transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the conventions conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple face the kind of problems that arise in most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is currently playing on Hulu as of this moment.
