A trio of officers perished and no fewer than 15 additional individuals were hurt in a seemingly intentional blast caused by gas at a country home in northern Italy.

Event Timeline

The detonation was triggered as police and firefighters went into the property near the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

The three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were arrested at the location and another man who fled following the blast was found shortly later. All three have been transported to hospital.

The blast could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the area displayed the building left as a mass of wreckage.

“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to remove the three family members in the past.

Background and Motive

The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was under an removal notice due to financial obligations accumulated by the three owners.

Mediators had been dispatched to talk with the family members who had secured themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect one of the residents caused the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno informed news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the property, the minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the blast comprised an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor thought the blast had taken place on a floor above the entrance and informed reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the blast, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas canisters being activated”.

Community Reaction

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants told Italian media, mentioning that the family members had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other government officials in honoring the three men who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
