A minimum of 64 Dead in Rio's Biggest Security Action on Organized Crime
No less than 64 civilians died in a security raid against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the largest and deadliest raid in the region's records.
Four police officers lost their lives during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives said. More than 80 individuals were taken into custody.
Violent conflicts commenced when around 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday morning. The Red Command responded with shooting, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities stated.
The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "prompt and effective investigations".
Raid Aftermath
The informal settlements adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the headquarters of a major illegal networks.
State officials stated a minimum of 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Many residents were hurt, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Community Response
Locals have likened the mountainous region - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "combat area" since the mission commenced.

The criminal network has been increasing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.
Security forces stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the operation, along with dozens of firearms.

The coordinated mission by civil and military police was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.
Many of the individuals are considered participants in an organization from the Pará state who are currently hiding in the city.
